We are now almost two months into solids with Eloise- CRAZY! We started out with some basic purees and she just wasn’t happy. I tried different times of the day, mixed it up with some baby led weaning (which she was a bit happier with) and switched to fruits a little sooner than I had planned. She would just get mad and cry! It took a few weeks to realize it wasn’t the food she didn’t like, it was just the way I was giving it to her. She liked when I would give her super steamed broccoli so she could feed herself, but freaked out every time I came near her with a spoon. I finally realized she just wanted to be on control! My little diva. I had prepped a few different types of purees so I decided to try that again but this time I handed her one of the NumNum Dips- we were in business! I was SO surprised at how much happier she was! She went from screaming and turning her head to happily making a mess and eating. I’ve also noticed she will keep chewing on them long after her food is gone. The soft texture seems to help with her teething pains- making them even more perfect!
Unlike a normal spoon, the NumNum is flat! Which is awesome because it lets your child dip into the purees rather than scoop. Scooping requires full wrist rotation which is something young kiddos who are just starting out with solids don’t have. It can actually take up to a year to fully develop! Crazy! I actually had no idea until I started reading up on NumNum. But don’t worry- letting your child use the pre-spoon is actually helping them develop wrist rotation so they will be ready for the big kid stuff.
The package comes with two NumNum GOOtensils which you can use these for any type of pureed food/yogurt. The blue NumNum is for first foods- the thinner purees/stage 1 foods. It has a dimpled head that will work with even the thinnest foods. The orange one has a channeled head that is perfect for the stage 2 foods. Eloise uses this one for her yogurt and purees we haven’t thinned out with breastmilk/water. NumNum uses FDA-grade TPE and food-grade polypropylene, which are free of PVC, BPA and phthalates. They are also hypoallergenic and SUPER easy to clean. All good things in my book!
Do yourself a favor and check these out! You can go to their official website for a full list of stores that carry them plus you can find them on Amazon. They have been such a huge help in this somewhat stressful eating journey we are on!
I also want to mention that they are in the process of launching a new product- an awesome beginner bowl. What caught my eye were the sloped walls and smaller center- which totally makes sense. I mean – I’m an adult and I still find it hard to scoop up the last bits of my soup! #truth Right now they have a Kickstarter going to make this dream a reality!
